||
The summer reading program at the Pharr Memorial Library is designed to encourage children to continue reading throughout summer vacation. Children kinder – sixth grade who enroll in the program will be rewarded depending on the amount of books they read. Registration was held June 1st- 6th but are encourged to register anytime their after. About seven hundred students were registered for the summer reading program. The reporting dates were June 8th –July 11th to submit reports and spend book bucks. A total of two hundred and sixteen students completed reading twenty books to attend the awards assembly. The awards assembly was held at Pepe Salinas Civic Center. Students were encouraged to read anything they like. Ten book bucks were given for completing twenty books and children were able to spend it at the Cowpoke Corral located in the children’s department. Rewards were food coupons, novelty items, cups, books, comics and coin purse. Children’s activities were also held throughout the month of June and July. Students were encouraged to participate in story time, games, little chef, movies, crafts, computers and presentations. A calendar of events was given out in the circulation area. The children’s department was the only area decorated in a western theme with three dimensional cacti, hay, watermill, bobbed wire and more. Books were displayed on top of the shelves near each western display. The only disappointment was lack of a summer reading program for the teen readers. No Visible book displays, calendar of events and information. Teens and tween’s were left out this summer. |
