Summer Reading Programs

South Pharr Elementary Library is one of the many libraries in Pharr-San Juan- Alamo ISD.  The PSJA library department provides a summer reading program for all schools elementary, middle and high school to implement before the students leave for summer vacation.   Nora Galvan the coordinator with her staff prepare, over see and organize this big event for the students of PSJA ISD.  Last years theme was "Wild About Reading" and this upcoming year it is "Reading Under The Big Top". 

Students are required to read anything they like as long as it is within their reading level.  Students are provided with a reading log where they will record the title, author, number of pages read and parents initials.  The students can make copies of a blank reading log or write the information elsewhere if they read more.  This program is geared for the present years pre-k students – 11^th grade.  Students entering pre kinder do not qualify till next year and student graduating high school are not eligible as well.  The reading logs are collected the first week of school when they go back.  The pages read by each student are calculated and one winner is announced for each grade level. All participants receive a certificate, prize and are treated to tasty snack. The winners are invited to the Bright Summer Reader Assembly held each year at San Juan Middle auditorium.  Students from each school and grade level are awarded a plaque, goodies and treats.  The principal along with the librarian are also spotlighted during this event and the district media takes pictures.  Students are also provided with many books, a field trip and book bags.  At South Pharr students are encouraged to participate in this reading program through the pictures taken the previous year, rewards and upcoming theme.  Students are provided with information on the local libraries available for them to read at as well as participate in the activities they provide.  All students are given a reading log even the students headed for middle school.  

This reading program is a big event in the district that encourages students to read for enjoyment, increase their reading ability and fluency. The Bright Summer Reader program is an excellent program that meets all grade levels and every child is rewarded.
